Not much happening in ponds this time of year. Just been wondering whether
there is any point running my filter through the winter, hard to see what
benefit it will provide.

This is my first winter with my 3000 gallon pond. My filtration is purely a
VF, and it has already been shut down for the winter. I am in MD.

It's a good point. I got some watercress which somebody told me thrives
better in running water. Not to sure if that's right but have left the pump
on just in case. Also the fountain does afford some protection to the fish
and at least the water is being oxygenated.

I have a bottom drain, so I shut my pump down. I don't want to circulate the
warmer bottom water with the colder upper water. As for watercress, when I
installed a stream this year, I tossed some watercress in. It grew much
faster in the stream then it did in the veggie filter.

This Site has died, along with my pump. Quite a big freeze here in
Shropshire last night and the pipe & water fountain have frozen solid. I
guess that's it for awhile. I hadn't considered the transference of cold
water to the warmer parts of the pond. But would it make that much
difference for a pond that's only 2' 6" deep?

Cheers

Take a look under the microscope and prepare to be amazed! Your pond is far
from dead as all the tadpole nourishment is showing a growh spurt.

One of the joys of the warm winter (until later today, I suspect) has been
the appearance of a flash of gold every now and then in an otherwise murky
mire.

Now this proves I have the most stupid goldfish around. For the last 5 years
my goldfish seem to ignore the temperature and even when there is ice of
pond they are swimming under it. Today they were trying to take food off the
top, food that was not there I will add.

Not once this year have they been down on the bottom and the water is as
clear as glass.

They also bread like crazy last year and 90% seem to have survived so I will
have to get some moved again. Last time I gave them to a local school which
is appropriate for fish this thick.

Gandalf. in a more shallow Wiltshire.

Likewise here in Shropshire. The fish have been very active this week in
the milder weather. Still waiting for the first frogs to appear. Also had
a Bullfrog in the area for the past two years. There was one tadpole last
year that remained a Tadpole for 9 months before it disappeared. I'm sure
it will be back.

Spoke too soon, one frog on the front doorstep a day ago :-) None in the
pond yet AFAICS though. Perhaps he thought it was too cold and wanted to
come in?

I Should Have Known Its My Age

Probably a stupid question, but do fish float when they die and then sink
after awhile, or can they sink on dying. The reason I ask is that over the
Winter I had 26 fish in the pond and I'm down to what looks like 18 or so.
I've had a couple of "floaters" but I can't see the "missing" fish.

The dreaded heron?
There are six resident herons near here, and though they usually hang around
the lake half a mile away I did see one fly overhead the other day. I
haven't managed to count my fish yet, but I've reconnected my 'Scarecrow'
heron scarer just in case. It's a wonderful thing, especially when it soaks
the local farm cat!
:O)

Cheers!

Seems to be variable. I've found some floating, some as a semi-skeleton at
the bottom, and one on the lawn*! And I've also have fish that have 'gone
missing' for a considerable period, and then turned up again. They must have
been either very good at skulking at the bottom of the pond, or taking
advantage of low cost airfares to visit relatives.

Tumbleweed

*First I thought it was a cat or similar that was responsible, but then
later I saw a fish jump out of the pond onto the lawn, flip a couple of
times, and finally flip back in. Had it flipped the wrong way, it would have
ended up like the other one, had I not been there.
